Tonsillectomy

Home / Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils, two tissues located at the back of the throat that are part of the immune system. It may be recommended for individuals experiencing recurrent or severe tonsillitis, persistent throat infections, enlarged tonsils causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing, or sleep-related breathing problems such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. The decision to perform a tonsillectomy is based on the frequency and severity of infections, the size of the tonsils, associated symptoms, and the individual’s overall health. The procedure is generally performed under anesthesia, with careful removal of the tonsillar tissue. In selected cases, tonsillectomy may be performed along with adenoidectomy when both structures contribute to airway obstruction or recurrent infections. Proper pre-operative assessment and post-operative care are important for a safe recovery. The procedure can help reduce recurrent throat infections and improve breathing, swallowing, and sleep quality when enlarged or chronically infected tonsils are the underlying cause.
